I Love Twist-Outs!

Ok so "wash n go's" are still my favorite, but "twists/twistouts" are a close runner up! To do this style, I washed my hair and then applied my GVP Paul Mitchell-The Conditioner throughout my hair. I then sectioned off my hair and applied Eco Styler gel (Olive oil kind) to a small section, brushed it through with my Denman brush, and twisted until I reached the ends. I then twirled the ends around my finger (this keeps the twists from unraveling). I do this to the entire head, and then let it air dry. I wear them for a about a week, and then gently untwist them...and voila...a "twist out!"

Fye product review!

Hello peeps! I just finished deep conditioning and two strand twisting my hair. I used a new product for my deep conditioning today. It's called Jessicurl Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment and my oh my...I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!! I shampood then applied the Jessicurl throughout my hair. I then put on a shower cap and a heated towel. I left this on for an hour. I then detangled (the tangles literally fell apart on their own) and then rinsed my hair with cool water. This is definitely going to be one of my staple hair products! Jessicurl.com or curlmart.com is where you can purchase if you want to give it a try.

On anther note...the Fyecurls.com website is coming along nicely. It should launch by next week! Yay!!! Peace and blessings yall! :-)

Fye-girl "Kameelah WOW -Fitness" Does Her Big Chop!

My friend aka "my adopted sister" gave me the honor of doing her BC on March 19, 2010! She is truly the last in her rather large immediate family to "go natural." So they, as well as I, are very excited for her to experience the freedom, beauty and versatility that natural hair offers! She has always been fab, but in my totally unbiased opinion,:-), she looks extra fab now! You go girl! Pics below are from her bc night, and the next day, when her cousin added hair color. She gets a 10 on the WOW-o-meter!

Excerpt from a wonderful letter I received today!!!

I am sooooo pleased that you are sharing your experiences with the world. God blessed women of color with beautiful thick, coarse, kinky/curly, cold-black crowns, so that we can truly be the majestic queens that we were created to be! This is not to imply that whites are not attractive. All people were created by God, and all are beautiful.

However, instead of being grateful for our natural beauty, most of us are ashamed of it!

I completely understand these feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. For 24 years, I felt the very same way. I thought the only pretty hair was long, straight, hair.
It is a blessing that an increasing number of black people are opening their eyes--their minds, hearts, and spirits--to truth.

Thanks again for your extremely valuable blog. God bless you!

Transitioning??? Or thinking about it?

Hey guys! Sorry I have been a little absent. I have been working on that secret project I mentioned in my post earlier this week. I am too hype about it too! Cant wait to share details!
So, lately I have been hearing more and more people talk about transitioning or wanting to transition to natural, but dont have the slightest clue on how to go about it the right way. Well let me first start by saying that it is not for wimps! Lol. This will be a long, trying journey. (hence the reason why I didnt do it, I just big chopped all my hair off!) But I have been helping people close to me make it through this tough stage. My sister Camilia is one of these people and she has been representing to the fullest. You may remember her...she was featured a couple of weeks ago on Fyecurls with her bantu knots, twistouts, braidouts, and rod sets. She is awesome! These styles are the easiest way to make your relaxed hair blend in with your new growth (natural) texture. If you would like to see these methods done, let me know and I will have Camilia do a video for you guys. Thanks in advance sis.;-)
Another important part of transitioning is deep conditioning/hot oil treatments. The new growth as well as the demarcation line (the point where the natural hair/new growth meets the relaxed hair is VERY fragile! If frequent conditioning and essential oils are not used on this area it WILL break! And those of you that are transitioning with braids, kinky twists, etc. need to do this as well. Dont let your hair be out of sight, out of mind, or this could prove to be damaging to those precious new strands that are growing in. I personally dont recommend flat ironing your hair too much while transitioning because this could cause heat damage on your new growth and cause it to lose it's curl pattern. So when you big chop, these pieces of hair will not behave properly. And that would be sad...so sad. :-(
So I wish those of you who are transitioning or thinking about it GOOD LUCK!!! You can do it! So gear up and arm yourself with essential oils: castor oil, coconut oil, and olive oil...to name a few, and some of my fav conditioners I mentioned under "My favorite products" post and you will be ready to big chop before you know it! Just keep your eye on the prize...healthy, natural hair! Peace and blessings yall!

Product Review!

I used a new product this weekend. LOVE IT! It left my hair moisturized and shiny. I cowashed with Aussie Moist conditioner(which I also adore) and then applied my SheaMoisture Sheabutter Leave-in conditioner. I then added a little Eco styler olive oil gel and proceeded to do flat twists on my hair. They turned out shiny and moisturized! And it smells soooo yummy!!! You can purchase at www.sheamoisture.com or on amazon.

More henna pics!

Fyecurl's Henna Day!!!

PICS ARE LISTED IN REVERSE ORDER. START FROM BOTTOM TO TOP TO SEE VISUAL PROCESS:

So I finally did another henna treatment on my hair. It was long overdue. I try to do this once/month at least. "Henna,Lawsonia Inermis, is a plant. The powdered leaves have Lawsone (hennotannic acid), a red-orange dye and antifungal, and will leave your hair glossy, dandruff-free, and healthy. Henna will penetrate and dye your hair's keratin. The resulting color will be a combination of your natural color and the red-orange henna color." (info from wwww.mehandi.com) I used the Jamila Henna, summer crop 2009. It is 100% natural. This is the preparation...

1) Mix the powdered henna with a mildly acidic liquid in a plastic container.
(I use green tea because it is not as harsh as lemon juice, etc. Bring water to a boil and then add teabags to it. Let it cool down. You will add this green tea liquid to your powder. For short length hair such as mine, I use 100g of henna. They come in 100g boxes. So I used one box. If you have shoulder length hair, you may need 3 boxes (300g). I mix 3 teabags per 100g. Add enough liquid slowly until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes.)
2)Cover the mixture with saran wrap and let it sit for about 12 hrs at 75 degrees F.
3)Next, I add honey to the mixture and stir until it is yogurt consistency.
4)Then I put gloves on and begin "mushing" the henna mixture into my hair. It may help to put hair in sections. You want to put a thick layer all the way from the scalp to the ends.
5)After your hair is coated with henna, wrap your hair with saran wrap, and then a plastic shower cap.
6)Leave this henna mixture on your hair for 1-6 hours. The longer you leave it on, the darker the stain will be.
7) Rinse hair well with warm water, shampoo hair with a non-sulfate shampoo, and then deep condition your hair.
8)Style as usual!

*You will notice the color right away, but it darkens over the next 3 days. It may take up to 3 henna applications to get the full effect: shine, strength. etc.
If you dont want the reddish gloss of henna, there are other natural plants that you can mix with the henna, to get the desired color you want. There is also a clear henna called cassia obovata. I use this in between regular henna sessions. For more info on henna,or to buy, go to www.mehandi.com.

Send in your favorite natural hairstyles!

So far I've had the pleasure of showing you two of my favorite people's hair: Fye-girl Camilia, our transitioner, and Fye-girl Billynda, our expert flat-twistouter..
:-)
I would love to show off some more natural hairstyles! Send in your pics and/or hair stories to Fyecurls@yahoo.com!

Fye's Girl Billynda and her "Hood Chic" Flat Twistout!

So I decided to try the "Hood Chic Flat Twists" (February 25th blog) this weekend and I really liked the results. While I was transitioning 7 years ago, I used to do tiny flat twists just at the front of my head, but I've never tried the big twists all the way to the back. So Saturday morning I washed my hair (using some random moisturizing shampoo from Wholefoods) and then used Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner and Kinky Curly Curling Custard. I made six chunky flat twists and I thought this style was pretty cute. Sorry, no pics...But I do have pics of the twist out. This morning (approx 48 hours later, because that is how long it took my super-thick hair to completely dry) I undid the twists and VOILA :-) An A+ goes to fyecurls for adding this style to my natural hairstlye repertoire.

Hood Chic Flat twists!

Ok so I have found a protective style for my hair in the winter time that I really, really like! (Protective styles are styles that "protect" your naturally curly/kinky hair from the harsh cold and wind that can dry it out and cause it break) The style is called flat twists. They are like cornrows except they are twisted to the head instead of braided. I used my Generic Paul Mitchell- The Conditioner and Castor oil. I also used a little Eco stlyer gel on the edges and ends. I feel a little "hoodish" when I wear my hair like this. LOL! So I made it "hood chic" by adding a little jewelry and lipgloss! Work it Fyecurls! Check out my "Hood Chic" look yall:

Product Review!

Today I cowashed my hair and used the Generic Value brand of Paul Mitchell-The Conditoner. It is a leave-in conditioner that I've seen many people give positive reviews. I used this first and then raked Eco Styler- Olive Oil gel through my hair. It is about 50% dry on these pics, but so far I "likey!" Shiny, soft, defined curls! What more can a gal ask for!
